Preparing for a photoshoot is already half the battle. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about comfort, calm, and knowing what you want.
If you worry about how you look or feel uncomfortable in your outfit, it can be hard to truly open up in front of the camera. That’s why I put together this simple guide on how to get ready for a photoshoot so that the experience is enjoyable and the result is that magical, “wow, that’s really me” feeling.
I focus on three key areas: outfit, appearance, and mood, plus some little details we often forget.
Outfit for Your Photoshoot
Comfort Comes First
The number one rule is that you feel comfortable. Your clothes should fit well or be slightly oversized — slightly bigger is better than too tight. You should be able to move freely.
Some fit issues can’t be fixed in Photoshop, so choose what makes you feel confident and at ease.

Use References for Inspiration
Feel free to look for inspiration on Pinterest, Instagram, or my work. It’s completely normal and helps you understand the look you’re aiming for.
Sometimes, adding one simple new piece — a top, accessory, or pair of shoes — can really pull an outfit together.
Colors and Combinations
For a harmonious look, I recommend using two, maybe three colors. Ideally, they should belong to the same color palette or match well.
If you want a pop of color, that’s great! Keep it to one accent piece: a sweater, accessory, lipstick, or scarf. This keeps your outfit stylish without looking too busy.

Appearance: Makeup and Hair
Be Yourself
It’s important that your makeup and hairstyle reflect you, not just the photoshoot look. You don’t need a complex makeup session or a hairstyle you’d never normally wear.
You can go makeup-free, do a light natural look, or a bolder accent — the key is that you feel comfortable and recognize yourself in the mirror.
Small Details
Minor skin imperfections can be corrected during editing. But if you plan to include video, keep in mind that imperfections aren’t fixable on video, so prepping your skin in advance is a good idea.
Mood
The Night Before
Take some time to care for yourself the night before:
- try to go to bed early;
- watch an inspiring movie.
It could be a romantic film, a light comedy, or anything that fills you with warmth and good energy. This helps you relax, sleep well, and arrive at the shoot calm and ready.
On the Day
You can be calm, thoughtful, a little melancholic, or dreamy — and that’s perfectly fine.
These states often look more interesting and authentic on camera. You don’t need to force smiles if you’re not feeling them — real emotions are always more beautiful.
Good mood doesn’t mean constant laughter or smiles. It’s about inner comfort and calm.
And if nerves appear — totally normal. I’ll help you relax and guide you through the poses. We’ll create everything together during the shoot.

Small but Important Details
Here’s a list of things that are great to bring along:
- hand cream;
- lip balm;
- a comb or brush;
- hair tie or clip.
These small items help you quickly fix your look and feel confident throughout the session.
Things to Avoid Before Your Photoshoot
A few things are best avoided the day before or the day of your shoot to prevent stress and disappointment:
- Don’t experiment with your look at the last minute. Extreme facial treatments or eyebrow procedures are best done 1–2 weeks before the shoot.
- Don’t use self-tanner or harsh cosmetic procedures the day before. They can come out uneven or give an unexpected skin tone that’s hard to fix in photos.
- Don’t pick your outfit at the last minute. Try your look beforehand so you won’t be stressed or rushed on the day.
In Conclusion
Preparing for a photoshoot isn’t about strict rules — it’s about caring for yourself and your state of mind. The more comfortable and relaxed you feel, the more alive, beautiful, and authentic your photos will be.
